i know this girl who admanatly claims that country music fits into the christian music genre.
now, i did some research on this subject (i ate at a restuarant that played country music) and thus decided to dedicate this entry (which the girl will never read) to proving how stupid she is.
first of all country music rarely falls into the stereotype which most of us ascribe to it.
i.e. if you play a country song backwords you get your dog back, your wife back, your farm back etc, etc pro nauseum.
country music-at least modern country music-is rarely about depression and loss.
instead most of the content of these songs refer to nostaligia, patriotism, and old fashion family values.
thus, my friends deduction that country=christian.
but here is my assertion. christianity is simply a part of the southern culture. much like rodeos, moonshine, kissing cousins, and the dukes of hazzard.
the example i give today is a song that i heard at the restuarant this afternoon. the lyrics are:
"it was where i drank my first beer
and gave my heart to Jesus
drove my first car
wrecked all to pieces"
you see, Jesus in that chorus was nothing more than a cultural symbol of growing up in the south. much like being annoying is a part of growing up in the north east.
so before you take your new kenny chesney cd on that next youth trip of yours you might want to think twice and give that new creed cd a try.
