its hard to pick a poem, just one single poem, to represent a great writer.
(ah, the sacred burden of the publisher and editor! i don't envy them at all.)
because today is carl sandburg day, and being fully aware that carl sandburg is not an incredibly iconic poet, i want to pick a poem that is going to help people get him.
carl sandburg wrote about love.
carl sandburg wrote about war.
carl sandburg wrote about the cities full of the poor.
carl sandburg wrote about injustice.
and i could easily pick a poem from any one of these subjects,
but it would only be a fraction of the whole.
so, here now is a poem that i think to be indicative of carl's philosophy.
feel free, if you know carl, to post a favorite poem of yours as a comment.
"a reporter in debt."
the poet who kept himself in debt
knowing the big stream of people
live with their feet and shoulders
clambering through pits of debt,
the poet spoke easy:
"why should i be free who must write chains?
how shall i write chains unless the steel
clutches my wrists and ankles?
unless i am dirty and dusty from the pits
how can i write the people of the pits?"
don't forget, limerick week starts on saturday!
