I write this on a king size bed on the 14th floor of a downtown New Orleans hotel. Though my window is not facing the direction of the sun, I am watching the effects of the sunrise. The grey light slowly waking up the world.
It's a pretty fog this morning. I am excited to soon be out in it, taking pictures of gravestones and beignets, the wide river, the ancient buildings.
If there is any city in America that has magical properties, this is it.
I pulled in yesterday around 6 pm, after an 11.5 hour drive through Arkansas and Mississippi. That soft fog following me the whole way.
I found an amazing deal on this hotel room, basically paying Motel 6 prices for 3 star comfort and view. I feel lucky and rich, even though I am neither. Or maybe I am both.
Even though I was exhausted from the drive, I almost immediately walked down to the French Quarter after checking in.
The streets were nearly empty. The city felt dark. Strange pandemic times.
There was some action on Bourbon street, but not nearly what one would expect. Maybe a hundred people on the streets. A mixture of masked and unmasked. I am not sure what I was expecting, but on account that I haven't been laid in well over a year and this city, even in its diminished state, still oozes of sexual and kinetic energy, I had my hopes up a little for something.
But I am too shy and anxious to go into bars during normal times and indoor spaces with people freak me out even more now, so I just walked the streets and watched the people. And that is enough excitement in and of itself.
I am staying here one more night.
Getting up now to walk to the famous Cafe du Monde to get me some coffee and beignets.
Historical and naturey things today (and a nap, please God, a nap)
Then I will go back out into the night tonight.
Somewhere different than Bourbon street.
I want the real New Orleans, if I can find it.
Honestly no idea where I will go from here when I leave tomorrow.
I fucking love being on the road.
