I have lived through five presidents now, but I only personally have memories of the last three.
My first political memories—my political consciousness, as it were—stem from the 1992 campaign between H.W. Bush and Clinton. I was 11.
And here's what I remember:
The cartoon Tiny Toon Adventures made some jokes that I did not at all get about Bush.
Dana Carvey, who was like a comedy god to me at the time, did a recurring bit as Ross Perot on SNL. I also did not get it, but I imitated it constantly.
My friend Jason told me that Bill Clinton really liked waffles. Like a lot. Jason told me that waffles were Bill Clinton's favorite food. In retrospect, I am assuming that Jason picked up somewhere that Clinton waffled on issues, but being also only 11, made some ill-informed inductions.
Lastly, I remember Bush giving a campaign speech where he said "my opponent is always talking about change, change, change. But if he wins that's all you'll have in your pockets is change."
I thought that was a pretty clever line.
I don't really know why all of this popped into my head at 4 in the morning, on the first day that I have been able to sleep in for months. I don't know why these thoughts have remained persistent enough that I could not fall back to sleep.
My thoughts have been revolving around the following question:
If it is, statistically speaking, true that most people keep the political ideologies of their parents, what was different for those of us who adopted a much different worldview than the one we were raised with?
Did Tiny Toons and Dana Carvey make me a liberal?
You know what? This is dumb. I'll leave this post up because maybe I'll want to revisit this question sometime.
But Jesus, this isn't worth me being awake for.
I am going to try to go back to bed. Stupid brain waking me up for this bullshit. Convincing me it would be worth writing about. It's such an asshole sometimes.
