Good morning, I told her.
I'm just looking, she said.
That's fine, I said, let me know if you have any questions.
And not just about the menu, I said, telling her the same joke I say every day at this job. You can ask questions about anything. Where do babies come from? What kind of car should I buy? Whatever.
Can I ask about philosophy? she asked.
Absolutely.
Why do bad things happen to good people? She asked, with a twinkle in her eye.
I have a few ideas, I said, but none that I am really convinced of. What do you think?
She looked at me and said,
"good" and "bad" are just human constructs. Things happen and we assign meaning to those things based on our perspective. We decide what is good or bad.
I like that, I said. Do you see anything on the menu you like?
Yes, I'll take some tea.
Moments like these are what made me love my job as a barista and bartender at the Museum of Contemporary Art.
I'm a little sad that I quit today.
Hopefully this new job provides just as much good conversation.
