I awoke this morning around 4 am due to some bad dreams and more than usual pain.
And there, framed perfectly in the square pane of my window, was a solitary bright star looking back at me.
And just to know that the little light I was seeing was not actually a star, but the planet Jupiter, living so many hundreds of thousands of miles away;
to know that I am but a small piece of the cosmos, that Jupiter and I are made of the same materiel that stretches out to infinity in every direction;
to know that I am the product of history, of many centuries of scholars and explorers who have enabled me to know immediately that this tiny speck of light in my window is a planet;
it all filled me with more peace than I have had in a very long time.
So thank you, Jupiter.
Thank you, Galileo.
Thank you, Universe.
Thank you, God. Who may or may not have had anything to do with this.
