there come moments in everyone's life that simply cannot be missed, even if one only participates as a spectator.
moments of destiny that will ineveitably alter one's existence.
i missed mine.
i never saw "gigli".
till this day i am still kicking myself for missing my chance of irony, sarcasm, and utter bemusement at someone else's expense.
so needless to say that when i saw a grade of F next to mike myer's "cat in the hat" in the paper today, i saw an opportunity that i could not pass up.
to my amazement, the theater was a full house.
98% of that full house was under the age of five.
there was, in fact two bus loads of pre-schoolers watching the film with me.
i thought that they would be a good determination of the film's value. after all the movie is a kid's movie, who can tell if its good better than a large group of kids?
they, as preschoolers are known to do, were wiggling, and squirming; laughing, and talking; and in general just being kids.
once the movie started, they all became completly silenced.
and i dont think that it was the i-am-amazed-by-something-shiny type of silence.
i think that these three year olds were perceptive enough to know that this movie was crap.
three year olfs dont think much is crap.
three year olds love barney, and the teletubbies; and you can get a laugh out of them by doing just about anything (falling down, making faces, and farting sounds seem to work the best).
the cat in the hat was apparently more boring than barney, and less funny than intestinal problems.
i seriously didnt hear one single laugh past the previews (the previews were apparently very funny).
with the exeption of the one time that i chuckled when the fish said "oh, my cod."
so clearly the kids didnt like it.
but did i?
are you kidding? i hated this film so much that i will probably force all my friends to see it, just so that they can appreciate how horrible of a movie this is.
the cat in the hat was no gigli, but it is a film that is clearly worth heckling.
and i am glad that i took the chance to do so.
